Hi José,
Good question. I would take a look at
http://www.loyola.edu/library/ref/apastyle.htm for the use of DOIs in
citations. The only difference is that you use the hdl prefix, so eg:
hdl:11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5
Many consider it as a good practice to have a resolvable version as
well, eg http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5
When creating HTML or likewise I would use
<a
href="http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5">hdl:11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5</a>
I would avoid citing the VLO, as there is no strict guarantee for the
stability of the URLs.
