Minutes "CLARIN Standards Committee Meeting" Aix-en-Provence October 25th 2016 Eight participants from 7 consortia Proposal for a new Committee Chair - Proposal: o Andreas Witt would like to step back from the chairperson position and proposes to appoint Piotr Banski (IDS Mannheim, CLARIN-D) as a new chairperson o Piotr Banski will would be freed from some of his work load to be able fill out the position o Charly Mörth (CLARIN-AT) accepts to continue as a vice-chair - Decision: o The committee members attending the meeting unanimously agreed on proposing to the BoD to nominate Piotr Banski as the new chairperson of the CLarin Standards Committee Main point of discussion wrt. to the tasks of the committee - The Committee discussed the roadmap towards the unification of the information on standards that CLARIN centres may or should be expected to use. - Context o Currently, lots of CLARIN-related documents on standards are available o Currently, there is no procedure that defines what formats/standards CLARIN centres are supposed to support Information on standards will be managed and offered: * as a single resource, * updated and re-evaluated by the Standards Committee and the other relevant bodies, * with the results announced at the annual CLARIN conference. o Standards are going to be classified, among others: * from the functional perspective, * in terms of the extent to which CLARIN centres are expected to support them, and in terms of the target user group. o We expect this information * to help users understand what conditions their data should meet, * to be useful for centres to make sure that their offer is complete, * to assist in establishing the interoperability guidelines for CLARIN, and * to be helpful in assessing new project proposals. To reach this goal we need: - A formal procedure by which CLARIN support for these standards is implemented - Parties involved: o Standards Committee o Centres Committee o Board of Directors - A proposal for such a procedure will be first discussed on the mailing list of the Standards Committee
