[Standards] CLARIN Standards Committee work - next steps

Dear Members of the CLARIN Standards Mailing list,

You may have noticed, that this mailing list has been mostly silent. As 
chairperson of the CLARIN Standards Committee I feel responsible for 
this. But the silence is - as you might have noticed - about to be changed.

Together with the Vice-Chair Charly Mörth from the Austrian Academy in 
Vienna and with Maik Stührenberg who a new co-worker of mine at the IDS 
in Mannheim I'd like to initiate several discussions. (Maik is an expert 
for Language resource related standards and I am sure that CSC will 
benefit from his input.)

Things I would like to discuss on this list before the group will meet 
face to face in Berlin are:

- Mission Statement:

   * What do you expect from the CLARIN Standards Committee?
   * What has been missing, what kind of activities should be extended?

- PR:
    * How can the work of the CSC be made more visible? (We plan to add 
an extra section in the CLARIN webpage, but there could be other options 
as well)

Our colleague Jan Odijk had a critical eye on the activities within the 
Clarin Standards Committee. Based on his experiences - amongst others in 
CLARIN-NL, i.e. the Dutch National CLARIN that is coordinated  by him - 
he developed some recommendations for the CSC. I would like very much to 
use his paper as a basis for a discussion of our next activities. I 
attach his recommendations.

I will meet Jan during LREC in Island and we will talk about his ideas 
there. I would be glad if you could provide some comments over our list. 
This discussion is open till we meet  Berlin. At this CLARIN meeting 
during the annual ISO meeting in Berlin, I would like to discuss a new 
workplan for the SC and a new mission statement (including a clearly 
defined scope of work).
