I've found that other people recommend to provide also the name of
the author and the year. But I assume, that (since users can
access the metadata) it is not really necessary.<br>

This resource is already listed in the VLO. How would be the proper way
to make reference to it? Just providing the above mentioned link, its
handle <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5">http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5</a>?
Can anybody provide an example?

Hi José,
Good question. I would take a look at
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.loyola.edu/library/ref/apastyle.htm">http://www.loyola.edu/library/ref/apastyle.htm</a> for the use of DOIs in
citations. The only difference is that you use the hdl prefix, so eg:
hdl:11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5
Many consider it as a good practice to have a resolvable version as
well, eg <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5">http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5</a>
When creating HTML or likewise I would use
<a
href=<a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5">"http://hdl.handle.net/11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5"</a>>hdl:11858/00-246C-0000-0005-BD11-5</a>
I would avoid citing the VLO, as there is no strict guarantee for the
stability of the URLs.
best,
